The public program has been over for 30 minutes, but the entire audience is still hanging around for some reason.
GO HOME. GO. HOME.
This is a pet peeve of mine re Museum events. From my opinion as an audience member, the measure of how good something is is how long I want to hold on to the experience and stay in the space. The above attitude is especially annoying if it’s…
My pet peeve is arrogant entitlement re: museum patrons. From my opinion as a museum professional, the audience is made up of grown-ass adults who can find their own way to the bar or cafe; they don’t need to have their mittens pinned to their coats and turned out the door. The above attitude is especially annoying when inconsiderate jabronis think that a museum is the same place as a bar, club, cafe, etc. You want to feel welcomed in the space? Then think about how to respect it. Would you hang around at a bar after it closed? Or make a restaurant stay open to make you another meal after the chef went home? I’m going to tip you off to something: all those theater shows and music gigs you were lingering at after the encore? No one wanted you there, either.
No one says “you have 5 minutes or I’ll release the hounds” but if my public programs staff has worked a 14 hour day and you’re still sitting there half an hour after the last person is gone, with your feet up on the seats and taking selfies with your BFF to show off what a beautiful unique snowflake you are, yeah, they’re gonna give you the evil eye. And you deserve it.

The AMA thread is up on /r/MuseumPros, ready for your questions. I’ll be back to start answering them at 7pm EST. Until then, I’ll be drinking whiskey and watching Scandal. (that’s a snow day law).
I’m going to do an AMA at /r/museumpros on Monday, March 3 at 7pm EST. Bookmark that link! I’ll open the thread an hour or so earlier so you can start posting questions. You WILL ask me questions, right? I don’t want to be all by myself on the internet.
Start thinking of your questions now. I’ll answer almost anything except where I work, because if I own up to that I’ll probably get grown-up-grounded (which is fired). And if that happens I have to go live in your mom’s basement. And trust me, you don’t want that.
